Liquorice is a herbaceous, perennial plant, common in Southern Europe and in the Orient, whose roots have a bitter-sweet taste, with imparpened-compound leaves, small flowers, lilac and spiny-hairy fruits. For medicinal purposes, the underground parts, the roots, are harvested.
It contains 5-10% glycyrrhizin (some sources up to 20%), which is the potassium, calcium or magnesium salt of glycyrrhizic acid.
The glycyrrhizic acid contains in its molecule two molecules of glucuronic acid and a glyceride acid molecule of triterpenic nature.
Besides glycyrrhizin, the root also contains: triterpenic acid glabric acid, derivatives of flavonoid nature: licirin and isocyanate.
An estrogenic hormone similar to estradiol , resins 2-4%, 0.5-1% lipids, 20-30% starch, 4-8% reducing sugars, mannitol, asparagine 2-4%, 4-6% mineral substances , B vitamins, benzoic acid, albumin, mucin, dihidrostigmasterol, etc.
Actions: anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, healing, epithelisant.
Recommendations and usage:
- rheumatism, arthritic pain: compressions and local massage;
- maintaining a healthy scalp and fighting against dandruff: in the form of washing and local massage.
Ingredients/100ml: demineralized water, propylene glycol, Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) - 14 g, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate.
